South Boston Obituaries & Tributes
William "Bill" Canavan
March 30, 1950 - September 27, 2024
We mourn the passing of Bill Canavan on September 27, 2024.
Bill's life was complicated, but inspirational. He personified redemption. After serving time in prison, he was released with nothing. But he worked tirelessly to rebuild his life despite multiple setbacks. Eventually, he recognized what he needed others needed too, but no one was there to help. So he became that help.
Bill single handedly created a non-profit organization dedicated to lifting others: the Bay State Release Network (formerly the Boston Release Network). He worked with hundreds of men and women released from incarceration with nowhere to turn. Not only did his work prevent harm, it created opportunity. He was a tireless advocate, chaperone, mentor, therapist, and friend.
Those who knew him best saw he had a zest for life; he found joy in almost anything, including the simple things–like a good lobster roll. There was also no one more generous. He would work day and night, weekday and weekend, and did so for years without pay. His reward was simple: helping someone have a better day today than they had yesterday.
Bill's interests were eclectic: he loved watching sports and the local news, reading legal opinions, and woodworking (indeed, he was a master woodworker). However, all that paled in comparison to how much he loved his cat, Whiskers.
We will celebrate Bill's life together at a memorial service. All who knew him are welcome. Come hear and share stories about what he meant to you. The service will be Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 11:00am - 1:00pm at the O'Brien Funeral home. Light refreshments will be served. We will livestream the event on zoom for those who cannot attend in person. (Link to follow)
